8/13/2026 Went with Steve Pearson and Kodi to check water levels at Jim Creek. Water was fairly high, no trouble launching. Saw four ADFG staff coming in to landing in an aluminum boat with a surface drive motor. They came into Jim Lake via the cut. At Swan Lake, best entrance to the lake proper is to stay as far south as possible, entrance has an S curve. New shaft sleeve seems to work well, no apparent grease consumption.

8/23/2026 Boat riding with James Kitchell on Jim Lake, McRobert’s Creek, and Jim Creek. Went to ADFG fish weir, biologist said 3600 fish counted so far, vs 2600 for all of last year.

8/25/2026 Fishing with James Kitchell on the Twentymile. Low water. One silver and two Dollies in an east side slough, caught by dragging eggs, none in the traditional fishing slough.

8/27/2026 Fishing with James and Steve on Portage Creek. Six bright silvers caught on eggs and wet flies. Fish were not caught before sunrise on the cloudy side stream on the rising tide, they were caught after sunrise in bright light on a falling tide as the stream flow cleared the tide induced cloudiness.

8/31/2026 Launch boats at Jim Lake, drive through cut and park close to Mark Gorman’s motorhome. Visited Beaver Dam, and decided it would make a good hunting spot. Mark had difficulty with Honda GoDevil.

9/1/2026 Duck Season Opener at Beaver Dam behind Mud Lake. Five wigeon, two Shovelers, one Pintail. James mutilated a wigeon trying to recover it, and two others were lost to the marsh. On one approach by a flock of wigeon, all three hunters each took a bird. On another, Mark Gorman took a mixed double, one wigeon, one shoveler.

9/2/2026 Yesterday’s party was joined at Beaver Dam by Steve Pearson. Eight birds shot, one glided a long distance and was lost. Cedar made several good retrieves, and took hand directions from Steve. She also made a great recovery by running down and recovering a wigeon who was trying to dive and hide in the flooded vegetation! She swam a great deal, and was very tired that night.

9/10/2026 Hunted Mud Lake’s Beaver Dam with Steve Pearson and Caden Wood. Caden killed his first Alaskan ducks with a triple on wigeon. Another wigeon and goldeneye made up the rest of the bag. Stopped hunting at 9:30, very little bird activity. The migration in this area does not appear to have started.
